Fast Bilateral Gauss Transform

(in English) Rapid advances in data acquisition technology increase importance of bio-medical imaging and processing. Edge-preserving filters such as the bilateral filters are useful to improve quality of noisy bio-medical images, although the bilateral filters are computationally expensive. In our previous work, we proposed a novel bilateral filtering algorithm by using the fast Gauss transform. Our algorithm approximates the bilateral filter quickly and accurately on high dynamic range multidimensional images. We achieved the approximations with linear computational complexity with respect to the number of image elements, where the exact filter requires quadratic computational complexity. In this report, we introduce the filtering results of bio-medical images obtained by CT and confocal laser scanning microscopy. We also demonstrate the theoretical and numerical comparisons with conventional fast bilateral filters.
