In this paper, we show scale-space properties of the boundary surfaces
in three-dimensional Euclidean space which are derived on the basis of
the differential geometry. The Canny operator approximately extracts the
structure lines derived independently by Enomoto et al. and Krueger and
Philips for planar grey-scale images. Analogous to their idea, Watanabe
and Enomoto derived structure manifolds in three-dimensional Euclidean
space. The performance of the Canny operator depends on the selection of
the variance of the Gaussian kernel used in pre-smoothing for noise
reduction. We examine the hierarchical properties of the structure
surfaces in the Gaussian scale space of volumetric images to evaluate
boundary-detection performances depending on the selection of scales, or
the variances of the Gaussian kernel. We derive and observe a
relationship between the boundary curves of slice images and the slices
of the boundary manifolds. |
