The authors have proposed the MIMO-Constant Envelope Modulation transceiver system with Low Resolution ADC receiver, MIMO-CEM, which is considered as one of the strong alternative candidates to the well known MIMO-OFDM system, suitable for wireless backhaul network in which relay nodes are fixed in their positions. One of the major problems to withstand the real application of the MIMO-CEM transceiver system is the channel estimation. MIMO-CEM is based upon the MLSE (Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimator) equalizer which needs accurate channel information to work effectively. On the other hand, MIMO-CEM design is also based upon very low resolution ADC at the receiver side (1-bit in some cases), which means that the received channel amplitude information may be partially or completely destroyed (1-bit case). These two contrary demands make MIMO-CEM channel estimation a big challenge; how we can accurately estimate the channel in this severe low bit resolution conditions for the MLSE equalizer to work efficiently. This paper considers this issue through designing an efficient channel estimator based upon block based adaptive filter. In addition, and in order to speed up the convergence rate of the proposed adaptive estimator, we design a correlator estimator as initial channel states estimation used by the adaptive estimator. We prove that the proposed MIMO-CEM channel estimator is effective in estimating the channel characteristics under different channel scenarios and different ADC resolutions. In addition, we evaluate the performance of the MSK and GMSK based CEM transceivers using the proposed channel estimator. |
