Reduction of crosstalk by quasi-homogeneous solid multi-core fiber

(in English) Multi-core fiber (MCF) is regarded as one of expected candidates for increasing the capacity of optical fibers. Using the MCF as a transmission line, crosstalk between each core is an issue to be solved. As a solution, we propose a quasi-homogeneous solid MCF, whose cores involve small structural fluctuations. Simulated results showed that applying very small fluctuation of structural parameters to the fiber, which does not affect on optical properties, results in drastic crosstalk reduction. We successfully fabricated the quasi-homogeneous solid MCF with low crosstalk and nearly the same property for all the cores. By investigating the measured results, we found that the crosstalk of MCF increases monotonically as fiber length gets longer. This length dependence agrees very well with the simulated results deploying the power coupling model.
