| 抄録 | （和） | (事前公開アブストラクト) Prosody has been established as an important factor in sentence comprehension, not only ‘overtly’ in spoken input but even ‘covertly’ in silent reading (Implicit Prosody Hypothesis, Fodor 2002). Koizumi (2009) investigated the contribution of implicit prosody in the processing of the ‘not-because’ ambiguity (e.g. Tim didn’t sing at the karaoke because he’d lost his voice [BEC>NOT] vs. he has a nice voice [NOT>BEC]) by embedding it under subordinate if-clauses. Their reading time data indicated that the strong dispreference for the NOT>BEC disambiguated sentences was no longer evident when presented under if-clauses (Scope x Context interaction p<.01). Drawing on Hirschberg and Avesani’s (2000) report of the prosodic distinction between the two readings, Koizumi (2009) hypothesized that such distinction was ameliorated under if-clauses (where any prosodic boundaries mid-construction typical for BEC>NOT are suppressed and a pitch rise, instead of a fall, ends the clause), making the prosody close to NOT>BEC’s regardless of disambiguation. This conclusion suggests, importantly, that the apparent violation of Late Closure previously found for not-because sentences is in fact subject to non-syntactic factors such as prosody. However, an experiment is yet to be reported on the overt prosody of if-clauses, showing that it does facilitate this prosodic effect on not-because sentences. The present study thus aims to demonstrate that this is indeed the case. Six native speakers of English read four not-because targets and their follow-up questions adopted from Koizumi (2009) in four versions (Disambiguation x Clause Type) silently first for comprehension, and then aloud at a natural speed. The perceived prosodic characteristics of the recorded speech was judged by another trained native speaker (and an acoustic (F0 and duration) analysis is conducted to find correlates to the judgments). The results suggest that whereas the prosodic properties of the two disambiguations were distinct in the main-clause context (replicating Hirschberg and Avesani 2000), in the if-clause context such distinction was not evident. Moreover, crucially, the prosodic properties of the if-clause utterances were invariably similar to the NOT>BEC prosody (no mid-construction prosodic boundary and a final rise). These results suggest that the if-subordination in fact not only ameliorates the prosodic distinction between the two readings but also makes the prosody of the NOT>BEC reading much more natural and accessible to the perceiver. These results confirm Koizumi's (2009) conclusion that prosody plays an important role in ambiguity resolution and establish the embedding into subordinate clauses as a natural means of prosodic manipulation. |
