Road signs provide important information to driver for safe and efficient driving. For realizing the long distance road sign recognition, we propose an active camera system. The system consists of a wide angle camera, a narrow angle camera, and two rotated mirrors. The narrow angle camera is equipped as an assistant of the wide angle camera. The rotation of mirrors can change the optical path of the narrow angle camera and make the system active. For recognizing a road sign at long distance, we utilize geometric information to detect road sign candidates from the wide angle camera first. And then the narrow angle camera will capture a high resolution image for each candidate by adjusting the position of mirrors. The high resolution image is used for classification based on template matching. The experiment result demonstrated that the proposed system can effectively recognize a road sign at longer distance compared to a single camera system. |
