Study on Spin Torque Oscillator using Generating Layer with Perpendicular Magnetic Layer

(in English) Microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) has recently emerged as a candidate to solve the trilemma in magnetic recording. In MAMR a device that can generate higher frequency magnetic field than 20 GHz is necessary. A spin torque oscillator (STO) that comprises three magnetic layers, a reference layer, a field generating layer and a perpendicular layer, was proposed by J-G. Zhu. Also, the authors proposed an STO that comprised two layers, eliminating a perpendicular layer, which utilizes a magnetic materials with large negative magnetic anisotropy as a field generating layer. They showed that the STO possesses several excellent oscillating properties. However, the STOs above mentioned have a problem that they require an extraordinarily large positive or negative anisotropy. We have investigated the possibilities that well known magnetic materials with ordinal magnitude of magnetic anisotropy can be utilized as a field generating layer in place of large anisotropy materials. In this report the oscillating behaviors of the STO with perpendicular anisotropy are described, comparing with the STO with negative anisotropy.
