The gamma rhythm oscillation in the olfactory bulb
plays an important role in
olfactory information processing.
This oscillation results from the
synchronization of mitral cells,
or the principle neuron in the olfactory bulb.
In addition, transition between
synchronous and asynchronous states
has also been observed.
Although the mechanism of the synchronization
is still unclear, a new mechanism which
accounts for both the synchronization and the state transition
has been proposed.
In this report, we employed Marella's mechanism
to analyze statistical properties of the state transition.
As a result, we discovered that the distribution
of duration of synchronous and asynchronous states obeys power law.
This result indicates that underlying dynamics of the state transition
is not a Poisson process but has a long time scale. |
