The Coding Divergence for Measuring the Complexity of Separating Two Sets
Mahito Sugiyama, Akihiro Yamamoto (Kyoto Univ.) IBISML2010-26
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this paper, we integrate two essential processes, discretization of real-valued data and learning of models explaining them, to give a modern theoretical basis for Knowledge Discovery. Every real-valued datum, which is obtained by observations or experiments, is discretized for distribution through computer networks. However, most of data mining methods do not pay attention to the process; i.e., they ignore the gap between analog and digital data. To bridge the gap, we propose a novel measure of the difference between two sets, called the coding divergence, towards integrating discretization and data mining through computational learning theory. Furthermore, we construct a classifier using the divergence, and show the robustness by empirical experiments.
