| (in English) | To develop stimuli-responsive liquid-crystalline materials, novel disk-like compounds bearing macrocyclic azobenzenes as mesogens are designed and synthesized, and their liquid-crystalline and photoresponsive properties were investigated. Each macrocyclic azobenzene having two or three azobenzenes connected cyclically, exhibited different liquid-crystalline phases, and smaller ring showed more ordered phase. Upon photoirradiation, phase transition from these liquid-crystalline phases to isotropic phase was observed. The phase transition is induced by the drastic conformational change of macrocyclic molecules caused by topological photoisomerization of azobenzene. | |
