Removal of Show-through in Duplex Scanned Image by Transformation of Pixel Intensity Distribution

(in English) In scanning duplex printed documents, show-through may degrade the image quality and character recognition rate. Show-through is a common phenomenon where the texts or images on one side is contaminated and appear on the other side. Since two images printed on both sides are essentially independent, this problem is a Blind Source Separation problem and one may think that Independent Component Analysis (ICA) can be applied for separating two images. However, ICA cannot produce show-through corrected images due to the frequent occurrence of the intensity pairs in the 2D space spanned by front side and backside intensities. In this report, we propose a show-through removal method using duplex scanned images by performing clustering and direct transformation of the 2D intensity distribution in order to make frontside and backside distribution independent. Through the separation experiments, we confirmed that our method performs well for removing show-through.
