Difference in odor discrimination between presynaptic and postsynaptic inhibition in the Drosophila olfactory circuit

(in English) A recent investigation has indicated that lateral presynaptic inhibitory input mediates gain control in the Drosophila antennal lobe. They have shown that the lateral presynaptic inhibitory input to projection neurons (PNs) roughly scales with total feedforward input from olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs). We investigate how this gain control mechanism contributes to the discriminability of odors in responses of PNs by simulating a network model of the Drosophila antennal lobe. To clarify the functional significance of ‘pre’-synaptic inhibitory gain control mechanism, which indirectly inhibits PNs by regulating the release probability of the synapse between ORNs and PNs, we also consider the case that inhibition acts ‘post’-synaptically by directly decreasing the membrane potential of PNs. We first show that the presynaptic global inhibition can sharpen the odour tuning of PNs whereas the postsynaptic global inhibition does not change it. We next demonstrate that the presynaptic gain control enhances the accuracy of odorant discrimination although the postsynaptic gain control only diminishes it. Finally, we discuss the reason why the odor discriminability can be enhanced by this presynaptic gain control mechanism.
