GREEN-CANES: Adaptive Activation Controls of Macro/Femtocell Base Stations for Energy Savings

(in English) Recently, research about energy savings in cellular access networks has been gaining momentum in response to increasing global environmental consciousness. In this paper, we introduce our research activity, named GREEN-CANES (Greener Cellular Access Network for Energy Savings), which consists of two types of techniques for reducing the power consumption used for base stations and femto/pico-cell access points to tackle global warming. One is a technique in which when some base stations become inactive (e.g., the RF power amplifier units are switched off) for a given traffic level (e.g., during night hours) for saving energy, some settings of the remaining active base stations such as antenna beam tilting are adaptively and continuously varied to take over the area that the inactive base stations covered and reduce the number of stationary dead spots as much as possible. The other is a way to adaptively switch the power of femto/pico-cell access points on and off in cooperation with macro base stations with striking a balance between energy saving and load balancing. We also show how GREEN-CANES works using a realistic scenario.
