In MIMO-OFDM mobile communication systems, this report clarifies a relation between (i) an improvement of peak to average power ratio (PAPR) reduction by subcarrier phase hopping select mapping (SPH-SLM) and (ii) power added efficiency (PAE) of a transmit power amplifier (PA). Although MIMO-OFDM can realize the high-speed and reliable transmission, it suffers from high PAPR characteristics. For reducing such PAPR, SPH-SLM, which can improve both the transmission performance and the PAPR reduction of the transmitted signal, has been proposed. When the PAPR-reduced signal by SPH-SLM is passed into a nonlinear PA, computer simulations have evaluated the spectrum characteristic and the packet transmission performance. However, the improvement of PAE by SPH-SLM has not been clarified. This report shows a relation between the amount of backoff of PA and PAE by circuit simulations when the PAPR-reduced signal by SPH-SLM is fed into a Doherty PA. It also shows an effect of the PAPR reduction by SPH-SLM on out-of-band spectrum characteristics and error vector magnitude (EVM), and evaluates the transmission performance by a transmission system simulation that includes radio propagation channels. From the measured relation between the backoff, EVM, and PAE, it is shown that the PAPR reduction by SPH-SLM can improve PAE of 12\% under the almost same EVM condition. |
