Improving Reliability in Flow Rate Statistics Estimation from Aggregated-flow Rate Measurement

(in English) For wide-area network management, it is of practical importance to constantly monitor and understand global traffic flows. However, it is too costly or impossible to directly monitor individual flows by checking the source/destination IP addresses in each packet on a large-scale high speed network. Therefore, estimating OD (Origin- Destination) traffic flow matrices has been studied, in which the flow rate statistics of individual flows among OD pairs can be inferred solely from the rates of aggregated-flows (the sum of flows) passing through at multiple routers that are easy to monitor. While the authors proposed an inference method and verified it using the real traffic between our campus networks and the Internet, a variation of accuracy was seen in the average flow rate inference. In this paper, therefore, to improve the stability of accuracy and increase the reliability of the inference method, we examine an appropriate composition of different inference results obtained from the different selections of parameters. The most appropriate parameter changes from case to case, and can't be known in general. From our experimental results, the proposed weighted-mixture scheme has shown a good inference accuracy comparable to the case of the best parameter depending on the situation in many different situations.
