Direction Finding Performances in UWB Short-Range Phase-Comparison Monopulse Radars

(in English) Ultra wideband (UWB) vehicular radars have attracted attention from a viewpoint of reducing traffic accident victims. This report presents experimental and numerical evaluation of direction finding capabilities of a phase-comparison monopulse UWB radar. Direction to a target (a trihedral corner reflector) was measured using a Ka-band UWB pulse radar equipped with a two-element monopulse systems in a radio anechoic chamber. The delta-over-sigma (DOS) patterns indicating the target direction were obtained with two methods: (a) employing a microwave hybrid coupler connecting to the two antenna ports to generate differential (delta) and summation (sigma) signals in the radio frequency region, and (b) directly detecting the two antenna outputs with use of orthogonal demodulators and calculating the delta and the sigma in the baseband region. Imperfectness of the microwave hybrid coupler and other factors substantially influenced the accuracy of the resulting DOS patterns, in particular with the method (a). The DOS patterns were analyzed and calculated to dissect the impacts of the error factors upon the direction finding performances.
