One promising way of creating novel optical-communication devices is controlling the permeability, as well as the permittivity, of semiconductor materials that form the devices. This can be achieved using the concept of left-handed materials (LHMs), which have attracted growing attention in recent years. We are developing 1.5-μm-band, waveguide-based optical devices combined with LHMs consisting of nanostructure arrays. In this paper, we present an all-optical switching device based on the dynamics of LHMs at optical frequencies. |
