The performance of a today’s computer is really marvelous. It can carry out a prodigious amount of numerical calculation in an instant and solve complicated mathematical equations almost effortlessly. However, a human is much superior to computers in such tasks, like seeing events happening in front, perceiving and recognizing them by intuition and association, and making a decision to take an immediate action. The purpose of our research is to develop a new-paradigm computing system most suited to such human-like intelligent information processing and, in particular, having a real-time performance. This is going to be done by best utilizing the state-of-the-art silicon technology. Namely, we are developing a series of VLSI processor chips dedicated to such brain-mimicking computation using digital, analog as well as mixed-signal circuit technologies. In some cases, even the physics of devices and materials is directly utilized in computation to achieve a low-power and efficient implementation of a system. Applications of such a system to medical radiograph analysis, face detection and identification as well as to moving object detection, tracking, and gesture perception will be presented as illustrative examples. |
