Non-spatial information is transmitted from the lateral entorhinal cortex to the dentate gyrus through the lateral perforant path, while spatial information is transmitted from the medial entorhinal cortex to the dentate gyrus through the medial perforant path. The lateral and medial perforant paths terminate on dendrites of dentate granule cells in the outer one-third and middle one-third of the dentate molecular layer respectively. We will report here using a four-compartmental granule cell model that the dentate gyrus selects non-spatial information and spatial information transmitted simultaneously and opens individual gates for the two kinds of information rather than integrates them. |
