[Invited Talk] Toward Understanding the Mechanism Underlying Animals' Agile Locomotion -- A Robotic Approach Based on a "Brain-less" Living Organism --
Akio Ishiguro (Tohoku Univ.) MBE2009-61 NC2009-59
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Animals exhibit astoundingly adaptive and supple locomotion under real world constraints. In order to endow robots with similar capabilities, we must implement many degrees of freedom, equivalent to animals, into the robots’ bodies. For taming many degrees of freedom, the concept of autonomous decentralized control plays a crucial role. However, a systematic way of designing such autonomous decentralized control system is still missing. Aiming at understanding the principles that underlie animals’ locomotion, we have been focusing on true slime mold, since the behavior of this living organism is mostly controlled by coupled biochemical oscillators. In this presentation, we present a soft-bodied amoeboid robot inspired by true slime mold. We also introduce a serpentine robot driven by a decentralized control scheme extracted from true slime mold. The results obtained are expected to shed a new light on design methodology for autonomous decentralized control system.
