The purpose of this study is to investigate the scene coherence (or decorrelation) time of ocean surface using the velocity bunching model of SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) azimuth wave imagery, and suggest a possible application to estimating waveheight of azimuth traveling waves. The wavelength and propagation direction of ocean waves in the C-band RADARSAT-1 data are compared with those of the numerical wave forecast model by JWA (Japan Weather Association). The JWA waveheight data are then entered in the velocity bunching model to estimate the coherence time of the sea surface. The result showed the estimated coherence time of approximately 0.02 s which is similar to the previously
estimated values by along-track InSAR (Interferometric SAR). Once the coherence time is known, the waveheight of azimuth traveling ocean waves can be estimated from the velocity bunching model, under the assumption that the sea surface has the same coherence time. |
