The satellite communiations networks today are based on IP technology. This enables a ready integration of different satellite communictions networks such as VSAT, MSAT in different frequencies, coverages areas and applications into one; the combined Internet. The combination can bring about the Intenet with full multicasting capability quite easily. The difficultty of multicasting in the Internet comes from two aspects; the Internet is a two dimensional network with a large number of routers the majority of which do not support multicasting and the multicast addresses specifies the multicast member groups for the contents hence give no routing information at all. Thus building multicast trees in the Internet is quite difficult all the more because the multicast groups can be many in numbers and distributed widely in the Internet and also can frequently change.
On the other hand the satellite communication can broadcast the signal over wide geographical area all at once. There can be no loops in the signal transmission. Thus the satellite communications networks are topologically equivalent to a LAN (Local Area Network) which is a one dimmensional topology. Thus a multicast server or a router combined with a satellite communication station can directly deliver the multicast contents to the group members with the satellite communication facility all at once. Furthermore some of the satellite communication stations can also function as multicast routers and extend the multicasting tree into the local Internet for users without any satellite communication facilities. By utilizing the universal coverage feature of the satellite communications and setting satellite communication stations colocated and connected with multicat routers, the topology of the multicast trees can be quite simplified and the length of the multicast trees can be drastically shortened. The satellite communications stations today are quite small and can deliver broadband (several Mbps) data easily, hence can be readily set as the end user facilites or parts of multicast routers. The effectivenes of the proposed system bocome instantly clear for tele conferences where any of the group members must be able to function as senders as well as the recivers of the signals; the proposed system can readily provide the multicasting networks for teleconferences where the purely Intenet multicasting trees for a single sender and many receivers can be very inefficient as the multicasting trees are hardly reconfigurable and the tree length can be very long for some sendes and receivers combinations.
The proposed system combines the features of the Internet and satellite communication networks based on the common IP protocols. As the satellite communications equipments have become so small, economical and of such broadband the proposed system will be quite effective to realize the Internet with full multicasting capability. |
