[招待講演]Challenges towards Future Internet Infrastructure

抄録 (和) The Internet is becoming a part of people's daily lives. Therefore it is affected by the macro trends of social evolution – rapidly increasing scale and diversity. For example, number of internet subscribers are still increasing exponentially and variety of new services are being created everyday. On the other hand, as an infrastructure, the Internet is expected to be efficient, fertile, safe and secure.
To satisfy these expectations, the future Internet is facing following challenges. (1) Scalability: The Internet should be able to accommodate more traffic generated by the increasing subscribers and services. Migration to 100 gigabit Ethernet and IPv6 are examples of key technologies. (2) Dependability: Since a large number of businesses and individuals depend on the Internet, high reliability and high availability are key technologies. (3) Ecology: The internet is consuming much more energy to process the increasing traffic. Therefore, saving energy is being important not only for economic reasons but also environmental concern. (4) Flexibility: The Internet should be a platform for variety of emerging services. To accommodate these services, autonomic network configuration and easy provisioning for quality of service are examples of key technologies. (5) Security: The Internet is shared by diversity of people, organizations and societies. Security is getting more importance for safe use of the network. (6) Operability: Easing complexity of the operation is a key to maintain the Internet.
This presentation introduces recent researches pursued by ALAXALA, which focus on High Dependability and Energy Saving. Authors propose Fault Tolerant Network architecture for the high dependability. It is composed of routers and switches which have redundant subsystems for high speed fault recovery and avoiding complex redundant protocols such like STP or VRRP. These technologies provide high dependability by reducing complexity of redundant networks and increasing stability. ALAXALA challenges to save energy consumption of networks by two different approaches. First approach is reducing power consumption of each electrical circuit building routers and switches. We selected architecture, circuits and components from a viewpoint of energy saving and designed original LSIs to reduce power consumption while increasing traffic processing capacity. Another approach is saving power consumption during low network utilization time. Although network traffic varies hourly and daily, the network is usually operated at the maximum performance all the time. ALAXALA developed power reducing mechanism by controlling local clock frequency of LSIs without interrupting communication traffic processing. It enables to schedule reduced power operation during low network utilization time.
