Study on Layered Adaptation Control in Sensor-Overlay Networks

Wireless sensor networks which constitute new generation information systems need to be highly adaptive to dynamic changes in operational environment, such as wireless communication quality, physical and logical network topology, and users' and applications' demand on communication. Adaptive behavior of control mechanisms implemented on different layers influences each other and such mutual interaction would lead to the instability and even failure of the system. Although so-called cross-layer network architecture and design allow different layers to share and exchange information and even control others to organize a system in a more integrated and cooperative manner, there is no basic design principle of inter-layer interaction. In this paper, aiming at building the fundamental design principle of layered control, we propose to express layered control mechanisms by using biological nonlinear model, i.e. attractor selection model, and show some examples of applications.
