Multi-phase orthogonal code based on Fourier matrix and its application to optical code division multiplexing

(in English) Fourier code, a novel multi-phase orthogonal code for optical code division multiplexing (OCDM) / optical code division multiple access (OCDMA), is proposed. The Fourier code is given as rows of Fourier matrices, which are a kind of generalized Hadamard matrix; therefore the Fourier code is a kind of complex-valued (I-Q) orthogonal code utilizing multiple states of carrier phase to represent a codeword, in contrast with conventional real-valued orthogonal codes such as binary Hadamard code or Gold sequences, well-known in CDMA systems for mobile communications. The use of the Fourier code in an OCDM/OCDMA system gives low multiple access interference property as well as a novel functionality, code adaptation, which enables to change a codeword represented by an optical encoder/decoder, even when fiber Bragg grating based optical correlators are used as optical encoders or decoders. In this report, the effectiveness of the Fourier code is experimentally demonstrated.
