The multihop network transmits the data packets through some relay nodes. In the case of an equidistance transmission, it can achieve lower transmission power than the singlehop network, because the transmission power decreases in inverse proportion to the square (or more) of distance.
The transmission power decreases as the number of relay nodes.
It is generally known that the multihop network is low powr consumption.
On the other hands, the relay nodes also have their own power consumption that does not contribute to transmission. Because of it, the nodes power consumption will increase in proportion to the number of relay nodes.
Considering the nodes power consumption, Therefore, the total power consumption of the multihop network can be great as the number of relay nodes increases.
In this paper, the authors studied the total power consumption of multihop network under various network parameters. As the result,
it is found that there is an optimum number of hops that gives the minimum total power consumption. For example, the optimum number of hops is 7 when the nodes power consumption is 0.9mW and the coefficient of pathloss $\gamma$ is 6. |
