Experimental Evaluation of a Transmission Rate Assignment Scheme at Each Node in Wireless Mesh Networks

(in English) Automatic transmission rate control is used by wireless LAN interfaces which support multi-rate transmission such as IEEE 802.11a/b/g. The transmission rate control algorithm depends on the implementation method. It is, however, hardly optimized for wireless mesh networks. In the wireless mesh networks where nodes are fixed, quality of each link will not change significantly over relatively short time. It is effective to assign fixed transmission rate which achieves the best transmission performance at each link while link quality does not change significantly. There are two assignment types for transmission rate. One type assigns a transmission rate at each link, and the other assigns it at each node. The former is not implemented for all wireless LAN interfaces. We have focus on the rate assignment at each node, which can be easily realized. We proposed a transmission rate assignment scheme at each node, which considers the best rate at each link. In this paper, we evaluate our proposed method by experiment using the testbed. Compared with the method that all nodes are assigned with the same transmission rate, our proposed method can improve the minimum throughput although the average throughput of both methods is almost the same.
