An experimental study on applicability of speckle pattern in an output light from an optical fiber to sensing applications

(in English) When coherent light beams (laser beams) are incident on one end of an optical fiber, transmitted to another end thereof to exit from there so as to form an output light spot on a screen, non-uniform intensity distribution called a speckle pattern is often recognized in the output light spot. The authors are trying to utilize changes in such speckle pattern caused by certain external disturbances applied to the optical fiber for the purpose of sensing of the applied external disturbances. In this paper, a multimode optical fiber is placed in a loop onto a support plate and the speckle pattern in the output light spot was observed while rotating the support plate. As a result, the speckle pattern appeared to rotate in the direction opposite to that of the rotation of the support plate. Quantitative measurements indicated the tendency in which at least a part of the pattern rotated about twice as much as the support plate rotation.
