Rotational Speed of Break Arcs Driven by a Permanent Magnet Embedded in a Ag Electrical Contact

(in English) Break arcs are generated in a DC42V resistive circuit. A permanent magnet is embedded in a pipe-shaped cathode. Rotational motion of the break arc driven by the permanent magnet is observed with a high-speed camera. The circuit current when the electrical contacts I are closed is changed from 5A to 21A. Rotational speed of the break arc is analyzed when the gap between the cathode surface and the magnet surface x is set to 1-5mm. The circuit current I and the gap x are changed. It is shown that the rotational speed of the break arc becomes fast for a certain arc length when the arc current and the radial magnetic field are increased. Shortening effect of the arc duration is confirmed by the rotational drive of the break arc with the permanent magnet. The maximum rotational speed is 69m/s within experimental conditions in this report when the arc length is 0.25 - 0.30mm.
