Performance Evaluation of Pseudo-Synchronous Medium Access Control Protocol for Duty-Cycled Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Many medium access control (MAC) protocols have been proposed to reduce energy consumption in wireless sensor networks.
Especially, asynchronous MAC protocols have received much attention because of high-scalability without any procedures for active state synchronization.
However, it means that every node does not know whether neighbor nodes are in the active state or in sleeping one.
Therefore, sender nodes need to keep on sending preambles until the target node wakes up, resulting in an increase of energy consumption and latency.
In this paper, we propose a pseudo-synchronous MAC protocol which can make a synchronous operation by including time information in ACK.
Thus, sender nodes can send packets at a time when the target node wakes up.
Our experimental results show that duty cycle and latency can be reduced by approximately 75% and 47% compared with X-MAC.
