A Study of Frequency-domain Filtering for SC-FDE

(in English) Broadband single carrier (SC) signal transmission is suitable for the uplink (mobile-to-base) wireless access due to its low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) property. The use of frequency-domain equalization (FDE) based on the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion provides a good bit error rate (BER) performance by exploiting the channel frequency-selectivity. In most practical wireless systems, the square-root Nyquist filter is used at both the transmitter and receiver to limit the signal bandwidth without producing the inter-symbol interference (ISI). In the most of literature concerning SC-FDE, the discrete signal presentation with symbol rate sampling is used and therefore, to the beset of authors’ knowledge, there has been no report on the effect of having the filter roll-off factor α on the PAPR and the achievable BER performance. As α increases, the signal bandwidth increases and hence larger frequency diversity gain can be achieved and also the PAPR reduces. In this paper, we discuss how α affects the PAPR and the achievable BER performance of SC-FDE transmission when frequency-domain square-root Nyquist transmit/receive filters are used.
