New Space Transportation System - Space Train (Elevator)

The Space Elevator concept is to hang a ribbon in space, reaching down to Earth, and attach to it a vehicle that climbs up and down the ribbon by traction, similar to cable cars on a ski lift. But this concept was science fiction. The problem was simple: no known material was strong enough to build it. Until recently no material existed that was strong enough to build the Space Elevator. In the 1990’s, the discovery of strong and light Carbon Nanotubes, with the potential to create material 180 times stronger than steel by weight, changed everything. This paper briefs the current research status for the Space Elevator in the world. And also it will introduce the Japanese Space Train system, which is a modified version of the current Space Elevator mainstream design and will present its features, major components, and the current status on several challenges. |
