Subjective evaluations of proficiency for tremolo played on the mandolin using Fluctuation Strength
Nozomiko Yasui, Masafumi Kinou, Masanobu Miura (Ryukoku Univ.) EA2009-20
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The tremolo played on the mandolin is said to be a continuous sound produced by repetition of attenuating sounds. The amount of acoustic amplitude of tremolo is usually fluctuated in terms of time. Therefore, tremolo is assumed to give us the feeling of fluctuation, which is thought to be concerned with subjective evaluation for performance proficiency. Introduced here is an evaluation method strongly dependent on the “Fluctuation Strength (FS)”, which represents hearing sensations from fluctuations of sounds. In this study, the feeling of fluctuation is described by FS, and an influence of FS on subjective evaluation for tremolo is investigated by evaluation experiments. It is confirmed that skilled tremolo is best performed under the region of lower level of FS.
