| (in English) | This paper reviews standardization activities of wireless communication systems based on unlicensed use of vacant frequency spectrum that is originally assigned to terrestrial TV broadcast in IEEE802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC). In November 2008, US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released the Report and Order (R&O) that allows unlicensed use of frequency spectrum that TV broadcasting service and other licensed low-power wireless devices do not operate in specific area, so-called TV whitespace. Since such unlicensed use is allowed to portable and handheld wireless devices in addition to fixed wireless devices in this FCC R&O, it has received considerable attention as a candidate of new wireless standard in a few working groups in IEEE802 LMSC. This report provides a brief overview of FCC R&O, current status of standardization activities in IEEE802.22, and TV whitespace Executive Committee Study Group (ECSG) that discusses coexistence mechanism between different IEEE802 standards operating over TV whitespace while the primary wireless systems such as terrestrial TV broadcast and licensed wireless microphone system are protected. |
