Various kinds of optical fiber reflectometries are developed with rapidly improved performance as a technology to diagnose the breakdown points in fiber optic networks/devices. As a unique technique, the reflectometry by synthesis of optical coherence function (SOCF) has been studied intensively in this laboratory. So far, km-order measurement range, cm-order spatial resolution, 45-dB dynamic range, and less-than-5-second measurement time have been achieved in the reflectometry by SOCF. However, these performances cannot be realized at the same time, mainly due to the modulation schemes of the light source: sinusoidal modulation or stepwise modulation.
In this report, we propose an optical coherence domain reflectometry (OCDR) using an optical frequency comb as the light source, which enables high spatial resolution, large dynamic range, and fast measurement speed at the same time. The comb interval of the optical frequency comb used for this proposed technique should be adjustable over broad range. To do so, optical frequency comb whose comb interval is changeable was generated by using a fiber ring resonator and a phase modulator. The comb interval was able to be changed from 40 MHz to 80 MHz. In basic experiments, we succeeded in measuring the reflectivity of adjacent PC and APC connectors that was not able to be measured with a reflectometry by sinusoidal modulation SOCF due to insufficient dynamic range.
In the experiment on OCDR using optical frequency comb, we succeeded in reflectivity distribution measurement with 5-cm spatial resolution, over 45-dB dynamic range, and 10-second measurement time at the same time. |
