Blocky artifacts occur in the decoded image, because video coding standards such as MPEG-2 and H.264/AVC perform spatial-temporal prediction, transform and quantization on a block basis. To reduce the artifacts, H.264/AVC adopts an in-loop filter called ``Deblocking Filter" (DF). Conventional DF is performed perpendicularly to the block boundary. Therefore, there is a good chance that the aslant edges to be preserved could be smoothed by the conventional method.
This paper proposes an enhanced deblocking filter method called ``Edge Adaptive Deblocking Filter" (EADF). EADF considers the characteristics such as differential images and intra prediction directions and relaxes the limitation of the filter direction. The simulation results showed that EADF was effective for the images which have long and clear aslant edges. We confirmed that the subjective quality of the filtered image was slightly improved. |
