Real-time reconstruction of neuralimage of retinal neural circuits
Jun Hasegawa, Tetsuya Yagi (Osaka Univ.) NC2008-162
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) With the previous physiological approaches, functional roles of visual neurons have been discussed using the models based on the responses of a limited number of neurons to simple visual stimulations. However, those discussions on the simplified input-output are not always valid with regard to more complex visual environment where actual biological vision systems work. In order to examine and discuss the visual functions of models, the system which can emulate the responses of a number of model neurons in real-time is needed. Therefore we developed a system for real-time reconstruction of the neural image formed by a group of visual neurons using a digital-analog mixed hardware consisting of a digital computer, field-programmable gate array (FPGA) circuits and analog resistive networks. Here, we report several experimental results of emulated retinal neurons and show that the system can be an effective tool for vision research.
