Burst-mode operation of semiconductor optical amplifiers for optical packet traffic

(in English) The authors have pointed out that burst-mode amplification for optical packet caused packet distortion by gain transience and collapse of WDM gain flatness by change of traffic density and input average power, then we also have presented configuration of EDFA which could suppress these impairments.
However, such configuration could be improved on cost and energy consumption because it adopted high power LD for pumping and gain flattening filter. In this report, we present hybrid amplifier as alternative configuration which adopted semiconductor optical amplifier as pre-amplifier of burst-mode EDFA, and clarify its advantage through evaluation of burst-mode amplification, gain flatness and bit error rate measurement.
Although these EDFA series were static, which means that there is no dynamic controlling configuration including automatic gain controlling or optical feedback loop, most important thing is that these EDFA series are supplemental for any kind of controlling techniques. We strongly recommend and promote to improve controlling system of gain transience by adopting our burst-mode EDFA series as gain block.
