Duration of Arc Discharge at Constant Gaps and the Minimum Arc Current

(in English) Arc V-I characteristics and arc extinction characteristics are important to study current interruption by arcs at electric contacts. Arc V-I characteristics have been studied by many researchers including Ayrton and Holm. However, the arc extinction characteristics have not been studied so much. For example, Ayrton limited her V-I characteristics study to stable arcs and did not discuss arc extinction. On the other hand, Holm proposed the idea of minimum arc current that is generally known as a boundary below which arc discharge does not occur. But, in experiments, arc discharge is often observed at currents lower than the minimum arc current. The purpose of this study is to research arc extinction characteristics. The duration of arc discharge around the currents at which arc extinguishes is measured. The results show that when the arc current becomes smaller, the arc duration becomes shorter. The average value of arc duration around the minimum arc current lies between 0.01 ms and 0.1 ms for tungsten electrodes, copper electrodes and carbon electrodes; and between 0.1 ms and 1.0 ms for silver electrodes and palladium electrodes.
