The spatial resolution of strain/temperature measurements using Brillouin scattering in an optical fiber is proportional to the pulse width of a pump laser light. However, because the phonon spectrum is broadened and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) decreases if the pulse width is narrowed to improve resolution, it degrades the measurement accuracy. In this report, we show that high spatial resolution with a long pulse can be realized by applying the pulse compression technique of high-resolution radar to the previously proposed pulse-prepump method and combining with a signal processing to cancel undesired components appeared in the spectrum. In principle, distributed measurement with an arbitrary resolution and an arbitrary SNR can be realized by the proposed method. |
