Broca’s area has been shown to be more extensively activated in articulating pseudowords than real words. However, it is not clear whether word familiarity affects the activation in Broca’s area during articulation. In the present study, we used low and high familiarity words, and pseudowords of the same length to investigate this problem in an overt articulation task. Low familiarity words activated a part of Broca’s area more intensely than high familiarity words. We postulate that the restricted part in Broca’s area is activated depending on the word familiarity level during articulation. |
