Because of the behavior that High-Frequency (HF) wave entering ionosphere will be reflected and return to the ground, HF line has been used for long range communication for a long time. However, its application to digital communication has been impeded by fading attributable to several factors. Ishijima et al. suggested a method for reducing the fading by the use of a circularly-polarized wave. Although its effects have been reported drastic, but his interpretation of reason for improvement the difficulty in understanding the deflection behavior in the ionosphere hasn’t allowed a reasonable explanation why it works. In this paper, considering multipath fading as the major cause of HF fading, we show that the polarization angle of the outgoing wave significantly affects multipath fading and hence that circularly-polarized wave can avoid HF fading. |
