| (in English) | We have been developing a system to assist simultaneous interpretation by introducing merits of consecutive interpretation. While recording a speaker’s voice, it replays the voice. Interpreters can stop the replay at any given point in time and restart after interpretation. This approach will free interpreters from simultaneously engaging in multiple tasks, such as listening to the original speech, comprehending it, translating it into another language and speaking out. We examined the effects of the system on English-Japanese interpretation using four trained interpreters. With the system, the accuracy and the fluency of interpretations improved. However, it took interpreters more than twice as long as the interpretations in traditional methods. We report our efforts to reduce the time delay and discuss the possibility of applying the system to sign language interpretation. | |
