Power consumption of network routers is becoming a problem because of the rapidly increasing network traffics. Video contents are one of the major causes of this traffic increase. There are increasing demands for the higher definition video contents which require huge transmission bandwidth. Here, we discuss the optical path network which can handle the huge capacity information with low-power consumption. AIST has lunched a new project named VICTORIES (Vertically Integrated Center for Technologies of Optical Routing toward Ideal Energy Savings), whose target is to establish technologies for ultra-low energy consuming optical path networks. Described here are the research plan and state of the art development of some basic technologies. |
