MIMO-OFDM is attracting attention as the wireless access technology for the next-generation mobile radio systems. In order to improve both the cell-edge throughput and the system throughput for MIMO-OFDM cellular systems without the bandwidth expansion, the authors are studying ECO-MIMO (Enhanced COoperative MIMO) system, in which the multiple BSs (Base Stations) coordinate the MIMO transmission scheme, and ECO-OFDM (Enhanced COoperative OFDM) system, in which the multiple BSs coordinate to control radio resource allocation to each user. This paper focuses on downlink cooperative MIMO transmission based on multiple base station (BS) coordination in order to improve the transmission performance of cell-edge users in MIMO-OFDM cellular systems. We study a cooperative MIMO transmission with Double Space Time block coding based Transmit Diversity (D-STTD) technique and evaluate its performance with consideration of the frequency offset difference between the local oscillators in the coordinated BSs. We confirm that it improves user throughput performance of the downlink at the cell edge. Moreover, we introduce the Per Site Rate Control (PSRC) technique, in which each BS independently controls its modulation level; we clarify that the PSRC technique is effective, especially when there is a significant difference in the average received power of the signals transmitted from the coordinated BSs. |
