A Study on the Accurate Estimation of the Number of Weak Coherent Signals

(in English) The most commonly used methods recently for the estimation of the number of incident signals are the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Minimum Description Length (MDL) methods based on eigenvalues calculated by the eigenvalue decomposition of the correlation matrix of the received signals and information criterion. The Method for Estimating the Number of Signals without Eigendecomposition (MENSE) method uses the QR decomposition that has less computational cost and is superior to the AIC and MDL methods because of using the hankel correlation matrices which can suppress the correlation of the signals and noise effect. In this report, we present the limit of the estimating parameters in the MENSE method. For overcoming the limit, we propose the new method for estimating the number of signals with a multiplicity criterion that is defined by arithmetic and geometric mean and the Otsu Ichimura Criterion (OIC) that is estimating technique for the rank of the matrix. Computer simulation results show that the proposed method is superior to the MENSE and the AIC methods in closely spaced coherent signals.
