[Poster Presentation] An Ear Ossicle Surgery Simulator Based on Transversal CT slices

(in English) This paper describes a virtual reality simulator for middle ear ossicle surgery. A segmentation method is developed to recognize the tiny ear ossicles at transversal CT slices. Through the volume reconstruction, surgeons can observe the 3D geometry of the recognized ossicles and the spatial relation with the temporal bone to diagnose the middle ear disease. Sur-geons can then use a virtual reality cutting bur to cut the temporal bone for opening the 3D tympanic cavity, and a reality vir-tual polishing bur to cut for separating ear ossicles with other bones or to polish the ear ossicles. These burring simulations can achieve real-time visual and haptic responses. A technique is then developed to judge if a separation among the ossicles or with the temporal bone occurs during the burring operations so that reposition simulations can be followed to align the ear ossicles. A simulation example for a real ear ossicle surgery demonstrates our system works well even for tiny ossicles and thus shows the effectiveness or to rehearse the surgical procedures, confirm surgical plans and train interns and students.
