Whole spine X-ray has been widely used to evaluate scoliosis. The options of treatments base on the magnitude and progression of the curvature, which is quantified by Cobb method. The angle between the superior endplate of the uppermost end vertebra and the inferior endplate of the lowest end vertebra is the Cobb angle. The purpose of this study is to design software for automatically measuring Cobb angle, decreasing measurement errors, facilitating rapid data acquisition. In order to calculate the angle of scoliosis, we use three methods of vertebra tracking: automatic regions of interest selection, template matching and geometric constrains to find the boundaries of spine. The tangent line coincides with an endplate boundary of the end vertebra are chosen for compute curve angle. The largest angle is defined as Cobb angle. Our experiments show that the proposed method can automatic measure the Cobb angle to evaluate scoliosis. |
