False positive rejection for detecting tumors in lung area of FDG-PET/CT image

(in English) In this paper, we propose a method that detects malignant tumors in a lung area of a given FDG-PET/CT image. Our method firstly extracts tumor candidates by binarizing the PET image, and then rejects false positives included in them. These false ones often include a part of the heart area because of its high FDG uptake. For this rejection, we constructed an eigenspace representation of FDG-PET images of normal lungs. Projecting the given image onto this eigenspace, we can suppress abnormal regions in the given image and hence reject the false positives in the candidates. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces the number of false positives without missing the true ones.
