Development of whole breast ultrasound system with CAD function

(in English) We have developed a whole breast ultrasound (US) system for breast cancer screening. The system consisted of a whole breast US scanner and a viewing system with computerized mass detection and classification functions. A 7.5 MHz linear probe on the scanner scanned a full-field breast in three sweeps automatically. The viewing system generated a whole breast US data by ‘stitching’ corresponding images in the three sweeps together. Each mass was automatically detected by used of two image features, i.e., edge directions and the density difference between slice images, and it was classified as a malignant or benign mass by linear discriminant analysis using six features based on the geometric and echo properties of the breast masses. Once the image was constructed as a volumetric data, the ordinary three dimensional (3D) display techniques were available for the breast US data. In addition, radiologist could compare left and right breast US images and compare of US images and other modality images. The performance of mass detection scheme was 80.6% (29/36) with 3.8 FPs marks per breast data. The classification method achieved test area under the ROC curve value of 0.94. The performance of breast cancer screening with ultrasonography might be improved by use of our proposed whole breast US system.
